Adventure in Kindness
An introduction to kindness as a transformational practice.
The world needs more kindness now. Yet there is no way to make other people kind. You, however, can choose this moment to become more kind yourself.
You are probably already kind. But it’s possible to be more kind. Do you dare to dream that you -yes, YOU - could be a remarkably kind person who transforms every situation you are in with your kindness?
If you say yes to kindness right now, you are going to be saying yes to an adventure. It’s going to require you to go deep into the source of kindness and expand your availability to the spontaneous flow of good in the world.
The Dalai Lama is famous for saying “My religion is very simple. My religion is kindness.”
Indeed, most major spiritual traditions lead people to practicing kindness. While the destination is simple – kindness - it is difficult to get there! That’s why we need spiritual practices.

Why is this called an Adventure?
Classes that help us master a skill are often framed as challenges. A 30-day fitness challenge, for example. I love the spirit of doing something every day so it becomes a stronger part of your life. At the same time, we have enough challenges right now! I don’t want to put any notion of strain on kindness. Instead, I wish to conjure the sense of possibility and transformation. That’s what makes it an Adventure in Kindness.
What will each class feel like?
Every class will include some wisdom teachings about kindness, poetry, and opportunities for small group reflection. Over half the class time will be dedicated to embodied meditations based on qigong which will help us connect with the source of compassion. You do not need any previous qigong experience.
Between classes you are invited each day to be available for unexpected opportunities to be kind. The challenge and gift of meeting and responding to these opportunities will be material that you bring back to class.
Session Topics
March 2: Introduction to the Kindness Adventure (option to attend as standalone session)
March 9: Kindness with Oneself
March 16: Kindness with Nature
March 23: Kindness with Others
This adventure will also explore,
“What is kindness, anyway? And why is it so hard?”
The art of recognizing and receiving kindnesses,
How practicing Big Kindness, kindness to all beings at all times, is a powerful form of protection,
How practicing spontaneous kindness purifies our energy.
Why it’s better to go on an Adventure in Kindness with others.
If you are serious about any goal, such as becoming an extraordinarily kind person, you will move towards that goal more quickly if you pursue it with others. Community adds the mix of cheering, accountability, and inspiration. When welcome others into part of our learning process we are also learning to draw on sources beyond our own limited capacities.
Learning in Community
Small group sharing is a key part of the online class sessions. That’s when we get to be real with each other about how deep and how surprisingly transformative it is to live with kindness.
Between sessions, connect with others from the class in the private online class space on the Mighty Network platform. The feed on the class page functions similarly to social media sites but without the ads, distractions, or other issues. A few times mid-week, you will be invited to respond to some quotes and prompts so that the intention of the kindness doesn’t get lost. This online part of class is optional although strongly encouraged – if you only want only to attend Zoom sessions that’s fine too.
What if I miss a session?
The recordings from the online sessions will be posted in the online class space. They will be available until the online class space closes.
My name is Emily Jarrett Hughes and I am a healer, teacher, dancer, and mother living in Minneapolis.
Kindness is a theme that emerged out of my lifelong work dedicated to creating harmony with nature, among people, and within ourselves. I have studied Spring Forest Qigong since 2006, completing Level 5, and am a Certified Instructor and Healer. I also teach dance as a tool for healing and transformation. Everything that I do leans into the interrelationship between healing ourselves, healing the water, and healing the world. I have taught hundreds of classes and helped hundreds of people with healing. I love seeing my students and clients strengthen their connection with body, mind and spirit and unlock their capacity to live vibrant, courageous lives.
