Power Play
Here’s a question worth asking as though you’ve never asked it before:
What does it look like to be powerful in this moment?
My personal answer feels different than it did four or eight years ago. I have evolved and so have the times. Old answers don’t pack the punch they used to.
In these chaotic times we need to have our compass points to keep our bearings. Thank heavens we have wisdom traditions to call upon and teach us about power.
Wisdom teachings about power
The springtime traditions in Greece and Balkans fascinate me because they engage with awakening spring. There are not many powers greater than the ability to bring forward new life!
Surely we want to align with the energies that bring us spring.
And! We have the power to contribute towards an abundant spring and prosperous growing season.
Don’t outright dismiss that sentence as superstition. In our dance circle we use that teaching as the starting point for exploring our power.
What makes us powerful?
During the Earth Day Dance Celebration we dance at points along the Mississippi River to bring harmony and blessings to our community.
For the core group anchoring the dances (and welcoming you to dance with us!), we have been focusing on cultivating our power in a few key ways:
Activating the core. As we practice holding up our arms with our back or lifting our legs from the belly, we build our core strength and embodied integration.
Moving in unison. Synchronized movement has many benefits including:
Moving together creates a powerful vibration. In 1831, some soldiers marching in step were astonished when the collective vibration of their steps caused a bridge to collapse. The collective vibration of our steps can also have a positive impact, rippling into the land and community.
Moving together increases a sense of belonging and resilience. This is super deep in our human animal brain. Moving in sync with others makes us more compassionate and increases our pain tolerance.
Please join us on Earth Day so together we can increase our sense of resilience, compassion, and joy as we generate a powerful vibration of love for our land, water, and community.
